How does a wine increase sales by 204% in what is considered by many to be a tough Bordeaux market? US retailers sold the 2020 vintage of this wine for $44. Over a decade ago Wine.com sold the 2012 vintage for the low low price of $35 (HERE). Not to talk about inflation, but $35 in 2012 and now I can buy it for $17.99 in 2026 and the quality has gotten better? Is this real life?!?!?! Every year at Wine Paris we hunt for one thing: bottles that look like they cost $40, taste like they cost $40, and don’t cost anything close to $40.
This February, we found one at the booth of Cellier des Dauphins.
The wine?
2025 Baron de Roncelin Côtes du Rhône Villages.
The first thing you’ll notice is the bottle. The glass is etched. Now, I am a sucker for etched glass bottles. That is the kind of packaging you normally see on wines at three or four times the price, and you all know how I feel about great packaging. You almost NEVER see it on a wine at $9.99.
The second thing you'll notice is the wine itself.
The Union des Vignerons des Côtes du Rhône was founded in 1965 in the village of Tulette, in the heart of the southern Rhône, and today brings together a group of village cooperatives and nearly 3,000 grape growing families. Back in 1967 they launched Cellier des Dauphins, which the co-op says has been one of the best-selling appellation wines in France ever since. These people know Côtes du Rhône better than just about anyone alive.
Fun historical fact of the day: Tulette sits in the old province of Dauphiné, which is where the heir to the French throne got his title. The Dauphin.
Anyhooo...back to the wine. Regular Côtes du Rhône can come from almost anywhere in the region. Côtes du Rhône Villages is a step up: grapes from a select group of villages, under stricter rules on yields. It’s the level just below the famous crus like Gigondas and Vacqueyras, and it’s where real value in the Rhône lives.
This is a Thanksgiving red if there ever was one. Côtes du Rhône is the classic turkey wine: dark fruit, a little spice, enough backbone for the stuffing and the gravy, and never so heavy that it fights the food. Put a few of these etched bottles on the table and watch people ask where you got them.
Your family by the look of the bottle will think you're serving them the primo stuff...then when they taste the wine they will know you're serving them the primo stuff...the only thing not primo here is the price 😂

Raptor & Crimson is made by Kevin Morrisey. My guy has a good story.
Morrisey spent a decade working as a cameraman in Hollywood - building sets, loading trucks, laying dolly tracks, bouncing between LA, New York, and Paris. He even has an IMDB page (HERE 😂). At 35, he decided to change his life completely. He got a master's degree in enology from UC Davis and set his sights on doing an internship at Château Pétrus - one of the most legendary estates in the world. He called. And called. And faxed. And emailed. And called again. Until finally Christian Moueix, the legendary winemaker at Pétrus, picked up the phone and said: "Yes, you can come work harvest. But please, stop calling me."
From Pétrus, Morrisey went to Stags' Leap Winery, rose through the ranks, got recruited by Tony Soter to be winemaker at Etude, then went back to Stags' Leap as head winemaker and general manager, and eventually landed at Ehlers Estate, where he spent nearly a decade as winemaker and GM making some of the best organic Cabernet in Napa.
That's who made this wine.

The winery that took the offer? McKahn.
Charles McKahn knew at 15 he wanted to make wine. After graduating from Cal Poly San Luis Obispo with a degree in fermentation science, he moved to Napa Valley in 2011 and landed at Chappellet on Pritchard Hill - one of the most respected estates in the valley. He spent five harvests there, working his way from cellar intern to Assistant Winemaker under Phillip Titus. From there he went to William Harrison in Rutherford as head winemaker. In 2022 he was named one of the North Bay Business Journal's "40 Under 40."
In 2014, Chuck and his wife Brittany, along with his parents Kevin and Denise, founded McKahn Wines. They're primarily known for Rhône varieties - Syrah, Viognier, Grenache - but when Chuck saw what was available from the 2023 vintage in Napa Valley, he pounced.
The result is Morning Glass.
The name comes from surfing - that calm, pristine surface of the water early in the morning before anyone else is out. It's 100% Cabernet Sauvignon from a prime site in southern Napa Valley, aged 18 months in French oak (40% new). The winemaking is meticulous: destemmed to stainless, 14 days on the skins, racked three times before bottling.
I know what I'm drinking tonight! And tomorrow night!

Quick question: when was the last time you saw a red Sancerre on a wine list?
It's very rare, and when you do see it, it's at a white tablecloth spot in New York, and it costs more than your entree.
There’s a reason for this.
Sancerre is famous for Sauvignon Blanc, and the overwhelming majority of the vineyards are planted to it. Only a small slice is Pinot Noir. And of that small slice, most of it is drunk in France and never makes the trip across the ocean.

If you’ve been on this list a while, you already know the name Antoine de la Farge. His Sancerre Blanc and Pouilly-Fumé have been two of our most popular Loire whites, and his Guillemain Pinot Gris from Reuilly was the bottle we waited almost two years to get our hands on.
Here’s what we love about him. Antoine didn’t grow up wanting to sell you wine. He grew up in it. His grandfather Bernard helped create the Menetou-Salon appellation back in 1959. But before Antoine came home to run the family vineyards in 2012, he spent 12 years in the wine trade, including a long stint as a buyer for one of the big French wine merchants.
He sat on our side of the table. He knows exactly what a wine should cost, and exactly what it should taste like for that price. Then he went home and started making it.
Everything is hand harvested. The vineyards are farmed organically. And his Pinot Noir gets aged in barrel to build complexity, the way the good stuff in Burgundy does.
If you love Pinot? This is what Pinot Noir tastes like when it grows on the same chalky soils as the best Sauvignon Blanc in the world. Bright red fruit, a little spice, a little earth, silky tannins. It drinks like red Burgundy at twice the price.
Pro tip: chill it. Twenty minutes in the fridge before you open it, just like you would with the Sancerre Blanc. Even now that it’s finally cooled off outside, you won’t be disappointed!

It could be our Wine of the Year...and it's $14.99
We taste A LOT of wine each year (someone has to do it!), all in hopes of finding those unicorns that hit every criteria: packaging, price, and quality.
Let’s be honest though...there is a lot of wine out there that is, how does one say, not so great. But there are pockets of greatness, and the co-op behind Saint Marc Canteperdrix is one of them.
Their entire portfolio is an embarrassment of riches, but this white wine is one of the stars of the show.
So who are these people?
Picture the south face of Mont Ventoux in Provence. If you watch the Tour de France, you know this mountain: the “Giant of Provence,” the bald, wind-blasted peak the riders dread every time it shows up on the route. Down at its base is a patchwork of vines, olive trees, cherry orchards, and truffle oaks.
That’s where these growers have been farming since 1928.
Les Vignerons de Saint Marc Canteperdrix is a cooperative, with cellars in two neighboring villages, Caromb and Mazan. Wine has been made here since Roman times (archaeologists have dug up the proof), and the Popes in nearby Avignon helped make Ventoux wine famous back in the Middle Ages.
Fun fact about Mazan: its other claim to fame is the château of the Marquis de Sade. We’ll leave that one right there 😂
And why a co-op? Because this is how so much of the best value wine in France gets made. Growers pool their grapes, share the equipment, share the costs, and nobody is paying off a fancy château. You get the fruit of an entire mountainside without the overhead. When a co-op is run well, it’s one of the best deals in wine.
This one is run well. The Guide Hachette, basically the bible of French wine, has written them up for years, and notes they’re more often recognized for their whites than their reds.
Which brings us to this bottle.
A blend of Grenache Blanc and Clairette, two classic white grapes of the southern Rhône. Grenache Blanc brings the body, Clairette brings the perfume.
The co-op describes it in three words: gourmand, fruité, et rond. Generous, fruity, and round. Pale gold in the glass, with acacia, peach, and grapefruit on the nose, then a fresh, citrusy finish that keeps you coming back for another sip.
This is a wine built to drink young and drink often. The co-op says enjoy it within a year or two, so this is not one for the cellar.
With that in mind, I know what I'm drinking tonight! Let's do this!

Back on June 19th Dolum Estates created a near feeding frenzy nationwide when they told industry insiders that they needed to raise some cash and were closing out 2 of their wines - one of them being their 2023 Dolum Estates Cabernet Sauvignon.
In the closeout game you rarely get everything you want. Either the price is unreal and they have like 5 bottles left, or they have a ton of inventory and have not aligned their price yet with reality.
In this particular case, there were 5,000 cases available and the price was insane.
It took us 12 days to get the sample wine in and tasted - and folks, one taste is all it took. It was go time.
That said, only 1,800 cases of the 5,000 were left 😂 - but we bought them all.
So who is Dolum?
Dolum was built by Chad Alexander, and if you’ve been around the Napa world for a while, that name is going to make you smile.
Chad spent about 25 years making wine in Napa, including stints at Robert Craig and the Hess Collection up on Mt. Veeder. Then in 2009 he did something a lot of us in this business appreciated: he launched a label under his own name, buying odd lots of great juice from wineries around the valley and selling it at breakneck discounts. He built a legion of fans doing it.
Dolum was the next step. In the winery’s own words, after 30 years of winemaking, Dolum was born to make limited quantities of super premium Napa red wine. Their top bottlings are small-lot Cabernets from places like Oakville, the Stags Leap District, and Pritchard Hill, and those wines sell for big money.
This one is their California Cabernet: 100% Cabernet Sauvignon, sourced from small sub-districts across select Napa Valley and Sonoma sites.
I’m gonna go hyperbolic for a minute and just tell you this may be the best sub $15 Cabernet we have ever offered. I’m not sure it is worth the $60 the winery charges for it but it’s dang close. For $15 it is absolutely absurd. If Cabernet is even remotely your thing you’re gonna want some, and if you’re like me and you love Cab and you love pouring it and giving it away at the holidays - you’re gonna be in for 2 cases 😂

Pour a glass and you'll see what I mean. Barely pink, with a faint bluish tint at the edges. Almost silver. Like moonlight on water, which is exactly what's on the front of the bottle.
So how do you make a rosé this pale? Two things.
First, they pick at night. The grapes come in cool, before the southern French sun can warm them up, which keeps the juice fresh and protects it from oxidation.
Second, direct pressing. The grapes go straight into the press, and the juice comes off the skins almost immediately. All the color in rosé comes from skin contact, so less contact means a paler, more delicate wine. Then it ferments cold, around 60 degrees, to lock in the aromatics.
The vineyards sit at the foot of the Montagne Noire in the south of France, facing the Pyrenees, anywhere from about 160 to 1,600 feet up. Atlantic air comes in from the west, Mediterranean air from the east, over clay-limestone soils and sandstone terraces. The wine is a blend that includes Grenache, and it's bottled in the little village of Rieux-Minervois.
What you get in the glass: white flowers, acacia, and peach on the nose. Crisp, precise, bright acidity, and a thirst-quenching finish. 12.5% alcohol, so a second glass is never a bad idea.
You've heard me opine before: rosé was never meant to be expensive. No oak, no years of aging, from the vineyard to your table within months. This is rosé priced the way rosé was always supposed to be priced.
Question is...am I taking more than one case home this week? I mean - it is supposed to be warm this week!

This unctuous pink wine is dry, stony, fruity, lengthy. Comprised of Grenache, Grenache Gris and Mourvedre.
Villa Gaubert Rose
It’s rosé season because it’s warm and getting warmer and rosés are cold and citrusy and tangy and refreshing and, well, once they’re properly cold, they’re delicious. Did I mention that they need to be cold? Dominique Haverlan bought the old Château Gaubert in Portets in 1988, which was then in ruins. He made it into something important, but he didn’t’ forget to make wine that you will want to drink at a reasonable velocity. That’s what rosé is.
Pale Comme La Lune Rose

You have been told that Pinot Noir is the most finicky of grapes; indeed, it’s supposed to be the “heartbreak grape.” The statement is not false but it’s also not completely true. To make great Pinot noir is bloody difficult and to do it consistently is virtually impossible, unless you’re in some famous place. But that’s true of most grapes. It’s true that Pinot noir grown in the wrong place is pretty dreadful, maybe more dreadful than most other grapes. But the middle ground has plenty of wealth to it – you need a friendly place for grape growing but not too friendly. With France’s Pays d’Oc, there are places where it’s easy to ripen grapes and areas that offer just enough challenge to coax Pinot Noir into showing its friendly and compelling side. This is an ideal example.

Our Annual Caymus Cabernet Blind Tasting!
And this year we're changing it up a bit. Given we've been doing these now for over 15 years, we have a long list of past champions that are still crushing it.
So this Saturday it will be Caymus against 7 past winners of this tasting...all blind. A tournament of champions if you will!
I'm getting fired up just writing about it!!
Caymus Cabernet is one of the hottest selling wines in any given year, but if we placed it in a lineup with less expensive offerings, and in this instance less expensive offerings that WAY outdrink their price point - could you pick it out? Would it still be your favorite?
We're going to find out this weekend!
I mean, a Ducati is supposed to go faster than a bicycle, and a $70 wine is supposed to taste better than a $20 one. Right? Well, maybe not. A wine's success isn't measured in MpH, it's measured in the taste that is transferred from the glass to your mouth. If you don't know the price, can't see the label, and can't hear someone waxing poetic in your ear about the wine's "score," then all that is left is the juice and your taste buds. It's a scary proposition for any winemaker. That's why you have marketing departments that design catchy labels, create campaigns to build a wine's image, and spend all of their time and energy essentially trying to convince consumers that a wine is great. The problem is that you can't out "market" a blind tasting.
Which is why we're playing "Find the Caymus Cabernet" this Saturday. The format is simple really. Eight wines will all be tasted blind on our tasting machines each at a cost of $1.00. ($8 to get through the whole tasting) One of them will be the 2023 Caymus Cabernet and the others will be an assortment of wines at every price point from a number of different regions. All you have to do is taste and pick your favorite. Yes, that's right, your favorite. If that's the Caymus, then great, if not, well that's OK too. You may be surprised as to what your favorites actually are.

$9.99 is my sweet spot. My guilty pleasure type of wine. I LOVE finding wine I enjoy for less than $10.
I went with my son and a group of dads and kids from his class to Cleveland last weekend for the Panthers game (not the ideal outcome). Prices of things when you travel border on the absurd.
I can get a diet coke at Costco for like $0.25 a can. That same can at the hotel in Cleveland cost $5. It's the same product for the love.
While its not an exact comparison - if I can find a wine that is pretty darn close to ones I really love at half the price? HUGE win.

$7.99 Pinot Noir that is changing the game...
Last week we introduced you to La Sente des Moulins Pinot Noir. Today, its big sister.
And I do mean big sister, because this one is from Burgundy.
Real Burgundy. It says Bourgogne right on the label.
Here's why that matters. White Burgundy is the most expensive Chardonnay on earth, and it gets worse every year (why is everything like this?!?!?). Village-level Meursault will easily run you $80 or more now. Puligny-Montrachet, more. The top bottles are priced like jewelry.
Bourgogne is the appellation that covers the whole region, and it's where the smart money has always gone. The grapes can come from anywhere in Burgundy, and this one takes full advantage: it's blended from selected parcels running from Chablis in the north all the way down to the Mâconnais in the south. That's more than 100 miles of Burgundy in one bottle.
Think about what that gets you. Chablis brings the steely, chalky, mineral side of Chardonnay. The Mâconnais brings riper, rounder fruit. Blend them and you get both.
The winemaking is clean and simple on purpose. Gentle pneumatic press. Cold fermentation in stainless steel. A brief rest on the lees for a little texture. No oak at all, so there's nothing covering up the fruit: pear, white peach, citrus, and that limestone finish.
Now the fun part. This wine has been a phenomenon in Denmark.
Danish retailers call it the country's best Burgundy value. The Danes have been quietly drinking it by the case while the rest of us overpaid for Chardonnay.

Here is how this happens...
Maison Bouterolle is not an estate. There's no moat, no tasting room, no family crest going back to Napoleon. It's a co-op. A collective of small but dedicated growers and vintners. Look at the label: Blend No. 016. Harvested, vinified, and aged by the house winemaker. Cuvée Spéciale.
That is the oldest model in French wine, and it's how some of the best bottles on earth get made. Every great Champagne house is a blending house. So are the storied négociants of Burgundy. The winemaker doesn't own the vineyards. The winemaker owns the palate. They taste through dozens of small lots of Pinot Noir from cooler pockets across France, keep the ones that sing, and build one blend out of them. Then they number it, sign it, and move on to the next one.
And the name? A bouterolle is the metal tip at the end of a sword's scabbard, the little piece that protects the blade's point. Finesse et Tradition, it says at the top. The whole label is a wink: this is the house that keeps the sharp end covered.
The wine itself is why we're here. Pinot Noir should be perfumed, silky, red-fruited, and light on its feet, and that is exactly what this is. 2025 vintage, so the fruit is a year off the vine and still bright as a bell. No heavy oak. No jam. Just clean, pretty French Pinot that tastes like it should cost 3x as much.
How does a wine like this end up at this price? Same story we keep telling you: France is sitting on more good Pinot than it can sell, and the négociants and co-ops who know how to blend it are moving juice fast. I'm not sure how long this kind of environment will last...but I'm here for it.
This is the weeknight Pinot. Crock pot chicken. Salmon. Pizza night. The bottle you open while you're still cooking.

Ok, so on this Friday, let me tell you about a ridge.
In 1892, an Italian immigrant named Giuseppe "Joe" Morelli, born on the shore of Lake Como, who fled to Switzerland to dodge the draft, crossed to New York, made charcoal for miners in Nevada, and cut redwoods along the Russian River as a lumberjack, finally saved up $3,100. He spent it on 80 acres of oak and redwood forest on the second ridge inland from the Pacific, just north of Occidental.
He and his sons cleared it by hand. Planted vines. Built two houses entirely of redwood, a three-story winery, and a cellar under the main house. In 1910 the three Morelli boys divided the property by drawing straws.
One of those straws is now Riddle Vineyard.
Riddle sits at 750 feet on Stoetz Lane, at the top of the Harrison Grade, six miles from the ocean. From the top of it you can look out over some of the most iconic Pinot Noir ground in America. Mornings are fogged in. Then the fog burns off and the vines sit in warm sun the rest of the day, which is exactly the recipe Pinot Noir wants.
Look at the neighbors. Aubert's UV-SL is here. CIRQ's Treehouse. Chenoweth. Dutton Ranch (not Kevin Costner's place 😂) farms the original Morelli vineyard next door. And Bill Price, the man who owns Durell and Gap's Crown (you know both names by now), planted a brand new vineyard at the very top of the lane. When Bill Price buys the lot next to yours, you're in the right neighborhood.
James Riddle planted his 17.5 acres in 2008, at high density on well drained Goldridge and Franciscan shale soils, and he farms it like a garden: clipping shoots to the wires by hand, making pass after pass through the rows to orient clusters and drop anything that isn't perfect.
Two more receipts on how coveted this fruit is. Rivers-Marie, the cult label from Thomas Rivers Brown, buys from Riddle. And an up and coming offering is also connected: Jason Driscoll got his first Sonoma fruit by knocking on Jim Riddle's farmhouse door with a picnic basket of homemade pâté and a bottle of Champagne. Riddle is the vineyard people bring gifts to get into.
Sojourn has been making a Riddle Pinot since the vineyard's first fruit, and Erich Bradley's approach hasn't changed. Each clone is picked and fermented separately. Mt. Eden clone (dark, robust berry fruit) is the backbone, layered with clone 115 and Pommard for complexity and structure. Native yeast, open top fermentation, 50% new French oak, bottled unfined and unfiltered. That is all winespeak for this is serious wine made by serious people 😂
Quick refresher on how we got it: Sojourn is a 10,000 case winery in downtown Sonoma that sells almost everything through its own allocation list. New ownership as of last year is trimming the lineup from 37 wines to about 20, and when a portfolio gets streamlined, wine gets closed out. That is where we step in.
