Back on June 19th Dolum Estates created a near feeding frenzy nationwide when they told industry insiders that they needed to raise some cash and were closing out 2 of their wines - one of them being their 2023 Dolum Estates Cabernet Sauvignon. 

In the closeout game you rarely get everything you want. Either the price is unreal and they have like 5 bottles left, or they have a ton of inventory and have not aligned their price yet with reality.

In this particular case, there were 5,000 cases available and the price was insane.

It took us 12 days to get the sample wine in and tasted - and folks, one taste is all it took. It was go time.

That said, only 1,800 cases of the 5,000 were left 😂 - but we bought them all.

So who is Dolum?

Dolum was built by Chad Alexander, and if you’ve been around the Napa world for a while, that name is going to make you smile.

Chad spent about 25 years making wine in Napa, including stints at Robert Craig and the Hess Collection up on Mt. Veeder. Then in 2009 he did something a lot of us in this business appreciated: he launched a label under his own name, buying odd lots of great juice from wineries around the valley and selling it at breakneck discounts. He built a legion of fans doing it.

Dolum was the next step. In the winery’s own words, after 30 years of winemaking, Dolum was born to make limited quantities of super premium Napa red wine. Their top bottlings are small-lot Cabernets from places like Oakville, the Stags Leap District, and Pritchard Hill, and those wines sell for big money.

This one is their California Cabernet: 100% Cabernet Sauvignon, sourced from small sub-districts across select Napa Valley and Sonoma sites. 

I’m gonna go hyperbolic for a minute and just tell you this may be the best sub $15 Cabernet we have ever offered. I’m not sure it is worth the $60 the winery charges for it but it’s dang close. For $15 it is absolutely absurd. If Cabernet is even remotely your thing you’re gonna want some, and if you’re like me and you love Cab and you love pouring it and giving it away at the holidays - you’re gonna be in for 2 cases 😂
