Sancerre for $24.99? Yes, Please!

2020 Lucien Reymond Sancerre Blanc

Release Price: $30.00

Finding Sancerre for less $25 these days is kinda like hunting for truffles - its extremely difficult, but if you are successful you are in for a treat...and we are in for a treat today!
Sancerre is a funny thing, 100% Sauvignon Blanc for the white wines, theoretically, a bit softer and rounder than their next-door neighbor Pouilly Fume (though I defy anyone to really tell the difference outside of people who live there), but more and more tasting like something from the New World.
How, you ask?
It’s okay, let’s just say you asked. With climate change, the wines are getting even rounder and fruitier than before – I’m not sure that’s a bad thing, the wine part of it anyway. But whereas Olivier Richard’s family legacy in the southern Rhone has been, like all wineries down there, sometimes threatened by increasing temperatures and climate extremes, other places have benefited. Richard’s Rhone wine-making grandfather, family lore says, always wanted to grow Sauvignon Blanc and so, as Richard has grown a small negociant business that expanded to include wines from Sancerre, he had to name the wines after his grandfather. Thus it is Lucien Reymond Sancerre, not Olivier Richard Sancerre. Grandpa’s smiling somewhere.
If Sauvignon Blanc is your thing (and remember, warm weather is coming 😁), you'll want to try a bottle of this!
Happy Thursday y'all!

2019 Quilt Cabernet for $49.99 per magnum? Yes, please!
That's the equivalent of $24.99 for a bottle - and at that price this is a screaming deal.
Not familiar with Quilt? This is the Napa Valley Cabernet Joe Wagner founded after he sold Meiomi, and of all the brands he has started recently this is the one that has caught on like wildfire. It's big, it's rich and everything you could ever want out of a full throttle Cabernet.
Based on the popularity of this wine we are pretty sure these are going to sell out today, so let's keep and it short and sweet, ok?

Snowvale at $9.99 - let the madness begin...

2019 Snowvale Cabernet

SALE Runs Tuesday March 8th - Sunday March 13th, 2022

In the near decade we have carried this wine, it has gone on sale at the $9.99 price point just four times. Yes - four times in a decade. Each time was like a feeding frenzy. Like we literally could not keep the wine on the shelf.
It was chaos. Controlled chaos, but chaos nonetheless.
I get it. Snowvale at $9.99 represents some pretty unreal value. We've even seen someone selling this wine for $31! (Picture below)
The wine just works. Tuesday night spaghetti? Boom. Wednesday night burgers. Done. Saturday night Netflix. But of course.
We have 560 cases to hopefully get us to Sunday.
Seems like a lot? Last time we ran this sale the average customer bought 7.2 bottles. That means basically 115 customers per store will get their 7.2 bottles and then we will be out!
I wish we had more, but we don't look gift horses in the mouth over here :)
So let's get to it! Get while the gettin' is good!
Happy Tuesday!

Taste the wine for FREE This Saturday March 5th from 12pm - 2pm at all 8 locations!
Do we have an unbelievable deal for you this Friday morning? Yes! TGIF!
Tomorrow are we hosting our first free tasting since the pandemic began to celebrate the deal? Yes!
So what's up?
Our ever expanding relationship with the Spire Collection (read more about them here), the luxury portfolio from Jackson Family Wines, continues to bear fruit.
Back in September the told us they had 600 magnums of 2014 Legacy Chardonnay they wanted to move out at a deep price (if we took them all). Legacy, if you are not familiar, is the flagship program from Spire in the Alexander Valley.
The wine was tied as the second highest rated Chardonnay from California by Antonio Galloni in 2014 (and that is saying something), so of course we were interested. It is ranked up there with names like Aubert, Kistler, Rochioli etc.
I included a list of the top California Chardonnay in 2014 from Galloni HERE.
We needed to taste the wine first, so they sent us a sample.
All I can tell you is that if you like Chardonnay, and you have the occasion to drink a magnum, you should not miss this wine for the equivalent of $20.00 per 750ml bottle.
Magnums are the way to go for multiple wine scenarios.
- Long term aging? Bigger is better.
- Dinner party or family event where you need minimum 2 bottles? Bigger is also better.
And they just look awesome.
We have 42 six packs left (58 six packs went out the door before we could even get this newsletter out!) - one shot deal.
You guys know what to do!

Grenache is a remarkable grape with the ability to generate rich, dark and powerful wine when the crop yields are modest, but just as equally it can make vast quantities of pleasant wine, with less color but vibrantly fruity aromas. As a basis for rosé, it’s very nearly perfect, and it’s been the grape of choice for southern French rosés for a century or more. A touch of texture, some brief gratings of black peppercorns and lots of raspberries and strawberries.

Rosé is the tipple of the tempting whether we are in Touraine, Tempe, Tuscaloosa, Tuscany or Saint-Tropez. Provence, the archetypal French vacationland, is the poster child for what modern rosé ought to be. Pale, quenching, lip-smacking.

If you stick around the wine business long enough, you’ll have seen it all. Where once wine coolers were cooler than Liebfraumilch, now hard seltzer is hot (served cold). White Zin was once de rigeur, though it was never French; it was from the good ol’ US of A. But then that became too sweet and the category died. Or seemed to. Because then rosé rose up like a zombie eager for fresh meat, though the current iteration of the pink stuff is more often French than not. Provence is the epicenter of it and the French have figured out how we like it: dry, pale pink, light and refreshing.

"When is it going back on sale?"
There is no wine we get asked that about more than Carmita. I think because at the sale price of $7.99 per bottle, we are talking about absolutely silly value.
So for those of you that have been asking - today through Sunday!
Why is it on sale? Just because we wanted to (and I need to stock up on a little bit)...no better time than now.
It's tough for me to explain how much I like this wine. It very well may be the best value wine I have ever tasted. Find me some other wine that delivers this kind of experience at $7.99...I just don't think it's possible.
Centuries ago the DO of Almansa produced high quality wines, albeit at that time they were sweet ones. The locals used Alicante Bouschet, but today they call it Garnacha Tintorera, and for the most part all the producers have nixed the sweet part of the equation. In the case of Carmita, they mix the Garnacha with 30% Monastrell to make this wickedly powerful red wine.
It's easy drinking, big, rich and all around delicious.
Oh, did we mention that the winemaking team behind this gem are involved in some of the most celebrated wine projects in Spain? So the street cred, in addition to everything else, is off the charts.
So there you go! Today through Sunday. You guys know what to do!

Breakout $9.99 star is back in stock and ready to rock!
02.16.2022
2019 Chazeaux des Beuchottes

Release Price: $15.00
winestore. Price: $9.99
Lowest Online Price in the USA!
*Curbside Pickup Always Available*
Maybe the breakout value star for us in the last two years has been Chazeaux. We sent you an e-mail about it one time in 2020 and you all clearly like what you tasted the first time you bought it. You came back for more and more in 2021 to the tune of over 30,000 bottles.
That kind of sales velocity matched with the global supply issues going on right now (like when is that going to end?) sent the wine out of stock over and over again.
Well, we are here to announce to you that Chazeaux is back! Prepare to buy your favorite inexpensive Pinot with abandon.
Beuchottes hails from the Languedoc-Roussillon, a region of France where Pinot Noir can prosper, but only in the cooler spots. As you have probably guessed, the components for this little gem come from some of the coolest areas in the region. That said, the main goal here was to marry a traditional and elegant French style of winemaking while highlighting some of the vibrant complexity you find in larger reds from the Languedoc - and Beuchottes accomplishes that in spades.
Things I love include Pinot Noir, and great wines under $9.99. This is in my wheelhouse!!
Happy Wednesday!

2018 Trefethen Napa Valley Merlot

Winery Price: $45.00 (Click HERE to see)

Lowest Online Price in the USA!

Like everything right now, Trefethen has announced the deal on this wine is going away at the end of the month! So this is the last shot!
Flashback 23 years (which sadly was 1999 - and I'm almost POSITIVE 1999 was, like, just a hot minute ago) and Merlot was the hottest thing in California red wine. People seemed to forget that Merlot had already long been one of the coveted bedrock grapes in Bordeaux, producing some of the world's most complex and expensive wines. California was making its move - in a big way - and that's all that mattered. During the 1990s, Merlot in California went from 30,000 tons harvested to over 300,000 tons harvested (yes - 10x). The gold rush was on.
Then, like only Hollywood could plan it, the movie "Sideways" was released in 2004 (which also feels like it was yesterday - where does time go?!?!?), the exact same year Merlot tonnage peaked at 423,000 tons harvested. I actually really like the movie Sideways. As a wine lover, it produced some great scenes that I loved like this one. It also produced maybe the scene that, to this day, has sent Merlot sales into an absolute tailspin. You can watch the clip here, but be warned there is some NSFW language :)
In Sonoma County alone, Merlot acreage from the moment the movie was released in 2004 through 2010 plummeted 48%. Yes, you read that correctly - Merlot acreage in Sonoma County was halved in just 6 years...and it still has not recovered. Tonnage in 2019 was still down 48% from the peak in 2004.
Well, we're here to tell you that while Merlot sales even to this day continue to feel the pain Miles inflicted on them in that parking lot, the people making Merlot are producing wines that are better than ever and absolutely first class. Case in point, the 2018 Trefethen Merlot.
The Trefethen family made their reputation with remarkable Chardonnay but increasingly it has become clear that it's their reds, especially their Merlots and Cabs, that ought to gain them fame. If you haven't had Oak Knoll Merlot before, just think about great Napa Cabernet but with more velvetly smoothness.
So basically what I am trying to say is that if high end Napa Cabernet is your thing, this is a do not miss....#justsayin'.
Happy Tuesday y'all!

100% Cabernet Aged in Taransaud T5 Barrels...for $19.99? This is not a drill.

2020 Brooks Bank Cabernet

Release Price: $39.99

We've got a big one for you today...
So when one of the best winemaking teams in Europe get together and gather juice from some of the oldest Cabernet vineyards in Spain (pic here), and age the wine in barrels typically reserved for $100+ wines (pic of the barrel here), and the retail price is set to be less than $40...we take serious interest.
Long story short, we loved the wine so much we bought everything they made. All 2,000 six packs. And because we bought it all, we are able to bring it to you for $19.99 per bottle. You read that correctly. This is not a drill.

It is powerful, poised and persuasive Cabernet and to put it frankly, stupid cheap for the money. Honestly, I wish this was one of those things that would never run out of supply.
So this Friday we have for you this special treat. It arrived into the United States on Tuesday and you all will be the only people who will be able to drink it.
I'm not exactly sure what I'm doing this weekend, but at least I know what I'll be drinking.
TGIF!

Pessimist back on sale at lowest US price!

Total Wine Price: $19.97 (Click HERE to see)*

We’ve been given the green light to get Pessimist back to you again at the lowest online price in the US at $15.99. This is one of those wines we almost get giddy with excitement over when we can offer it at prices like these...
Right now I'm not sure there is an item we have a tougher time keeping in stock due to its insane popularity other than Pessimist.
What's up with the wine?
If there was ever a wine that's been on cruise control since it was released, this would be that wine. Daou Vineyards launched The Pessimist back in 2016 and while I don't know how much they sell globally, I know people are obsessed with this wine. My business partner tasted it and the first thing out of his mouth was "This is what The Prisoner used to taste like when it went huge".
Pessimist is a blend of Syrah, Zinfandel, Petite Sirah, Tannat and a splash of Grenache. All those grapes together remind me of the feeling I had when I first saw someone make a Miami Vice at the Tiki Bar at the beach. Pure Heaven. You know what I'm talking about (If not please order a Miami Vice on your next beach vacation and thank me later).
Happy Wednesday you guys!

Some Paso Robles Cabernet Worth Your Attention!

2018 Smith & Hook Reserve Cabernet

Winery Price: $45.00 (Click HERE to see)
winestore. Price: $34.95 (net)
Lowest Online Price in the USA!

Sooooooooo...any time we can bring you a wine we really love to drink, at the lowest price in the US, we jump at the chance. Smith & Hook Reserve Cabernet, while not in our "everyday drinker" price category, is one such wine.
Back in 1980, Nicky and Gaby Hahn bought a couple of ranches and turned them into vineyards. Most of the vineyards around Monterey were devoted to white grapes; that was all to the good, and they did good Chardonnay for sure. But Cabernet doesn’t like it too cool. So, after a quick drive down the 101, you’ll enter into the Paso Robles AVA and that place excels with Cabernet.
Many years and many successful wines later, their Smith & Hook reserve bottling is built from three vineyards in the northern portion of Paso Robles: Estrella River Ranch, Cass Vineyard and San Juan North. They’re all on the eastern side of the mountains, and ripening is not a challenge there.
Think powerful, plump, and easy drinking Cabernet.
You guys know what to do! As always, THANK YOU, for your business. We are humbled by the opportunity to continue to serve you.

This red wine is not for the faint of heart...

2019 Ladron del Palacio

Release Price: $50.00
winestore. Price: $29.99 (net)

When I'm in the mood for big red wine, if I can find a bottle of Ladron, that is what I want. We just got in the last 50 six packs of this vintage, so we needed to let you know.
As we said in the subject line - this wine is not for you if light wine is your thing. But I think I agree with this review in saying that it's not too big:

What makes this stuff so special?
Many of you know and love "Escorlada" - the $20 showstopper from one of the first families of Spanish wine that we brought into the United States (the wine with the ships on the label).
Well, that wine has a big brother...and by big brother, we mean BIG.
This Spanish powerhouse comes from nearly century old garnacha vines, yielding some of the lowest tonnage yields I have ever heard of, and is aged in 100% new Taransaud French Oak (think the Ferrari of the barrel world).
When talking about low yields, let us take the Musigny vineyard for example - one of the top spots for Grand Cru Burgundy (Pinot Noir), where bottles start around $300. Le Musigny typically in a good year will yield some 3,500 liters of wine per hectare. The yields from the Garnacha vines that go into the Ladron yield just 700 liters per hectare (that means every 2.5 acres of vines at this site only yields 933 bottles of wine).
In Napa these bottles would cost $500 just based on that alone :)
The first time we tasted it we were floored - one by the color and the flavor profile (think the wine equivalent of the movie Roadhouse) - but also by the price we were offered. It only further reinforced to us that some of the most outstanding values in all of winedom continue to come out of Spain.
First come, first served. We hope you enjoy it as much as we do!

The fine folks at Foley Family wines informed us this week that the new vintage of Highland Falls will be released at the end of April / beginning of May. That was great news to receive, until they followed that by telling us all we have in stock is all we will be getting until that release.
According to our system, that means we have roughly 4 weeks of inventory left...and unfortunately these things kinda take on a life of their own when supply gets tight, and it kinda becomes like a run on the bank 👀
So here is your fair warning. If Highland Falls has a permanent place in your weekly lineup like it does mine, you may want to get a six pack or so to hold you over. If you're like me though you will buy six, hoping to space them out, and then just drink them immediately and be sad you did not buy more 😂
What's up with the wine?
"Mountain-grown, it’s the richest kind,” as coffee commercials used to say, but it’s also true of Cabernet. You rarely, if ever, can find mountain fruit in $12 wines. Like, I can't even think of one off the top of my head.
Foley Family's winemaking pedigree being involved doesn’t hurt either: the guys who bring you Merus, Chalone and Chalk Hill Wines are behind the powerhouse Highland Falls lineup too.
It's kinda like if the people behind Dom Perignon launched a $12 sparkler - or the winemaking team behind Rombauer rolled out a $12 Cali Chardonnay.....these are the best of the best in the Cabernet world, bringing you world class value.
This review from Vivino sums up my thoughts on the wine very succinctly!
That's it for today. You've been warned! Get while the gettin' is good!

All the best deals come to an end. That is the way things go in wine. Each vintage creates only a certain amount of product...and when it's gone, it's gone.
That brings us today to Silenus "Tyros" Cabernet. We were notified yesterday (thank you for the heads up I guess?) that the 2017 vintage has now run its course, and what we have is all we are getting.
So the roughly 7 cases we have in stock at each store is it!
Silenus has quite the history in Napa. The estate used to be known as Newlan Vineyards. Bruce Newland was a rocket scientist from San Jose who liked to vacation in Napa Valley, so he decided to start a winery (why not!). He chose this southern portion of Napa Valley because it enjoys a longer growing season, earlier bud break and optimal ripeness. But Newlan had to change hands in 2008 and so Silenus rose up, starting on a track that has culminated in being one of the first Napa Green properties (the sustainability program from Napa Valley Vintners) to develop a Carbon Farm Plan for the vineyards to become Carbon Neutral, regenerative farming that is the gold standard in sustainability and healthy farming. While other types of farming (organic or biodynamic) may be healthy for the grapes, they do not address the use of fossil fuels or the work required of vineyard workers. Owner and President Scott Meadows came aboard when it was Newlan but now he, his wife Yuko and his two daughters live, garden and create wine there.
So there you have it!
First come, first served. You guys know what to do!
TGIF!

SALE runs Thursday January 27th - Monday January 31st, 2022
I'm not going to lie. I'm ready for spring.
I'm ready for warm weather, I'm ready for unlimited amounts of rosé...I'm just ready for all things spring.
I actually drink rosé year-round, and every January we pick one of our favorites to put on sale to help get us through the cold winter months. An aspirational sale if you will, for all things spring and summer.
Balcon, our #2 selling rosé, has all the things we love about dry rosé. It delivers everything you want in spades. This unctuous pink wine is dry, stony, fruity, lengthy. Comprised of Grenache, Grenache Gris and Mourvedre, there’s a lot more here than many a rosé that you’ve tasted before.
So I'm gonna open a bottle tonight, I'm going to finish watching this season of Ozark (anyone else watching this show?), and I'm gonna pretend I'm on that boat on the label :)
You guys know what to do!

In 1991, Sarah and Sparky Marquis finished their winemaking studies with $1,000 and dreams of their own business. They started as winemakers for Sarah’s parents in McLaren Vale. Then in 2006 they started their own brand, Mollydooker (Aussie slang for a “left hander’), and lovers of powerhouse wines like The Wine Advocate continue to call their wines ‘Best Value Wine in the World’. These are not subtle wines, but then isn’t that what made Australian wine famous in the first place?
Blue Eyed Boy is one of their 100% Shiraz wines and people seem to continue to love this wine after all these years. 13,000+ reviews on Vivino is pretty stellar, especially with comments like: "Trust me, this is an investment into your future happiness!"
Now that is a review we can get behind! So let's cheers to your future happiness!
Happy Wednesday!

Austin Hope, makers of the eponymous Austin Hope line of wines, as well as Treana, Liberty School, Quest, and a few others, released last year an "entry" level Cabernet that is downright insane for the money.
Austin Hope’s family started farming grapes and wine in Paso Robles more than 30 years ago. While they planted apples, they were quick to realize that grapes could prosper as well; few did in 1978. Cabernet Sauvignon, along with Zinfandel, has long been their lodestar, and the power of Paso Robles Cabernet is now a benchmark for California wine. It also doesn't hurt that one of Austin Hope's mentors was Chuck Wagner (of Caymus fame).
The Hope family used to sell grapes to Caymus, and many have opined that the Austin Hope line of wines are eerily similar to Caymus in style, at a fraction of the cost. We will let you all decide if they taste as good!

Maybe one of my favorite finds over the last 12 months has been the 2017 Copain "Les Voisins" Syrah.
I would love to blind taste anyone on this wine and ask them what they think it is. Some people don't drink Syrah, or say they only like Cab or Pinot etc. But I think anyone who tasted this completely blind, not knowing a thing about it, would really fall in love with it.
Why? Because it’s clean and redolent with fresh, well-preserved fruits of red and black cherries, along with the spices of new barrels (cinnamon, pepper, allspice and toast).
But will the taster consider it great or at least top-flight? Well, what separates “commercial” wines from the wines that we profess to find greatness in? There should be expressions of depth, length and complexity in wines that approach greatness and I would argue that this wine embodies all that. Copain, like other estates that Jackson Family Estates has purchased (this one, in 2016) and now runs, was a star before it was purchased and it remains so today.
So if you're looking to step a little outside of your normal routine and find some greatness in some wine, I would look no further than this wine!
We'll get it up on the tasting machine at all 8 stores, just in case you don't believe us :)

There is a chance (😂) that you've read somewhere that supply chains everywhere have been disrupted due to COVID. The wine industry is not immune to this situation. Case in point, this prosecco. Our container was set to arrive November 18th. Then December 10th. Then December 20th. Then Jan 4th. Then January 8th........
You get the idea.
I am happy to report that Raffaello Prosecco, easily the best $10 sparkling wine we have ever tasted, has finally come back in stock!
The minute we tasted this "extra dry" Prosecco from Raphael Dal Bo we knew we had found something special. Once we saw the price we knew we had basically gone all Indiana Jones and found the Holy Grail of Prosecco. Tastes great in a mimosa? You know it. Tastes great on its own? Of course. Budget friendly? Bingo.
What's up with Prosecco?
After decades as an only vaguely popular international wine, in 2009 Prosecco was redefined; its lesser regions becoming DOCs and its more specialized areas, Conegliano-Valdobbiadene and Colli Asolani, gaining DOCG status. There was plenty of good news in that: no more would lesser areas be available for bottling as Prosecco, and Italy could go to war against other countries (like Australia) labeling their white wines as Prosecco. For Australian producers (and others), Prosecco was a grape, not a place. Concomitant with these changes, Italy had re-titled the grape as Glera, thus mooting any possibility of other countries insisting that they were just naming their wines Prosecco as a varietal designation. Maybe it helped, but Prosecco blew up, internationally speaking.
This labeling scheme was good lawyering stuff, for sure. But the larger issue is that Prosecco is now rather complicated, if it is more protected and (theoretically at least), more controlled and likely to be of higher quality. Prosecco producers also began labeling their wines by sugar levels: Raffaello’s Extra Dry (made of 100% Glera) has about the same amount of sugar in it as most Champagnes, so it’s not sweet. But Prosecco of old was generally dry and the higher end DOCG stuff remains so. Confused yet? You should be. This is all wine law in full frontal evolution and it’s anybody’s guess if this makes Prosecco sexier or more popular than it already is. That said, it's still the first choice for most folks.
So, literally, our ship has finally come in! Let's get to it!
