How about something awesome for TGIF?
Two Tenuta di Arceno wines, Arcanum and Valadorna, were breakout collectible hits for us in 2021 and 2022 - at a "deal" price of $64.99.
Fast forward to this fall and the wine is back, and we have worked out a doozie of a deal.
Tenuta di Arceno has an amazing story. The estate sits at the fork of two ancient rivers that once formed the nexus of Etruscan civilization over 2,500 years ago. The name itself - Arceno - comes from the Etruscan word "archè," meaning "point of origin." Which feels appropriate, because this is where some of Tuscany's most compelling wines originate today.
For centuries, the estate passed through the hands of Italian nobility. In 1829, it was purchased by Count Emilio Piccolomini Clementini - one of the most illustrious families of Siena. We're talking about a family that produced two popes, ran merchant banks across Europe, and basically defined Tuscan aristocracy. The Jamie Dimon of their time 😂. The Piccolominis built the romantic gardens, lakes, and magnificent villas that still stand today, commissioning the famous architect Agostino Fantastici to transform the grounds into an English-style romantic park that took over a decade to complete.
By the early 1990s, the estate had fallen into disrepair and was actually slated to become housing development. Enter Jess Jackson and Barbara Banke in 1994. This was one of the first estates the Jackson Family purchased outside California - a leap of faith at a time when Chianti Classico was going through something of an identity crisis. But Jackson and Banke saw what others didn't: 2,500 acres of spectacular Tuscan terroir with the bones of greatness still intact.
Here's where it gets interesting. They brought in Pierre Seillan - the legendary French vigneron who would go on to earn sixteen 100-point scores from Robert Parker at Vérité in Sonoma. Before planting a single vine, Seillan's team mapped and identified 63 individual micro-crus based on soil composition, topography, and mesoclimate. They've had the same core team for three decades now: Seillan as founding winemaker, Lawrence Cronin as resident winemaker, and Michele Pezzicoli managing the vineyards since 1995. That kind of continuity in this business is rare.
The winery is massive in scale but fanatical about precision - producing some of the most interesting and powerful wines in the Chianti Classico DOCG region and under the Toscana IGT designation. The estate is in the southern portion of Chianti Classico in the all-important commune of Castelnuovo Berardenga where both Arcanum and Valadorna, two of the leading wines of the estate, are produced. While Arcanum gets most of the attention, Valadorna might actually be the most compelling wine in the range.
Valadorna is a Merlot-led Bordeaux blend (typically around 65-75% Merlot with Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Petit Verdot) sourced from the cooler Valadorna and Capraia vineyard blocks where a stream runs through the property. This isn't jammy, overripe California Merlot. This is not Right Bank Bordeaux either. This is Merlot with a Tuscan accent - and in this place the grape takes on characteristics you simply don't find elsewhere. It's structured, complex, built to age, with this firm backbone that's distinctly Italian. The 2014 has had a decade to integrate and evolve, and at this point it is firing on all cylinders. The tannins have softened beautifully while maintaining structure, and there's a secondary complexity developing that you simply can't get in young wine.
I actually think James Suckling hit the nail on the head when he said "A rich, powerful super Tuscan that reminds me of some of the cult wines of Napa."
We can offer you the 2014 from this estate for $44.99 per bottle. The lowest price we have ever been able to offer it for by $20. My wife and I shared a bottle on Tuesday night and I can confirm this may be one of the better sub $50 wines you will have this year (and dare I say next year too 😂). It also pairs extremely well with a fire and all this cold weather.
I am drinking one tonight! We made it to the weekend!
