Now, it’s a third-generation project but the critical piece, the vineyards, is really what has allowed this family to achieve such demonstrated excellence. The Cabs are firm, powerful and very classically Napa-esque.

Cape Charles Chardonnay
When it comes to Carneros, it’s the proximity to San Pablo Bay that matters. Every time it heats up in central Napa or even in the Central Valley, the air rises and is replaced by the cold, foggy stuff flowing under and through the Golden Gate Bridge and all along San Pablo Bay. The sun burns it off each morning and grapes that require acidity for balance (like Chardonnay) thrive in it.
Snowvale Cabernet
It's no surprise that I love Snowvale Cabernet. It's classic California; ripe fruit, full-bodied, hints of spice, firm tannins, and an intense yet balanced finish. The surprise is that it's only $13. This is one to buy by the case. Just don't tell your friends how much you paid.
Bonnet Hill Cabernet Sauvignon
Alexander Valley is distinct in its pure friendliness; the wines are genuinely enjoyable from day one, expansive of fruit and reliably supple throughout their lives. Once you taste this, you'll understand how much of a bargain it actually is.
White and Sea
It’s surprising that grapes like Sauvignon Blanc aren’t more widely planted in southern France, as they can be harvested fairly early to retain bright and citrusy acidity without really losing character or even complexity. Maybe wines like this will encourage more winemakers to try working with crisp and aromatic white grapes in Languedoc-Roussillon.
Seigneur Du Feu Cabernet
Throughout the last two centuries of winedom, French wine has been aged in French oak (minus a few years surrounding WWI but we’ll save that history lesson for later). American oak is crucial to many other wine regions: Spain, Australia, the U.S. (maybe even Silver Oak). So this is a southern French Cab with American oak’s lashing of coconut and vanilla – the classic aromas of American oak barrels. An unexpected but happy marriage!
Benieres Pinot Noir
Fresh and fruity Pinot Noir from the Pays d'Oc, a region warm enough and varied enough to allow even persnickety Pinot Noir to find its happy place.
Domaine Priou Sauvignon Blanc
Sure, most people think that France is neatly laid out, codified and completely explored but, outside of Burgundy and Bordeaux, there are still plenty of vineyards that deserve more attention. The Loire Valley demands that kind of recognition and, in the era of climate change, it is increasingly a source of delicious wines. Sauvignon Blanc used to be notable only from Sancerre and Pouilly Fumé. Equal measures of fruit and mineral.
Highland Falls
"Mountain-grown, it’s the richest kind,” as coffee commercials used to say, but it’s also true of Cabernet. Foley Family's pedigree doesn’t hurt either: the guys who bring you Merus, Chalone and Chalk Hill Wines are behind the powerhouse Highland Falls lineup too.
Larme en Rose
If you stick around the wine business long enough, you’ll have seen it all. Where once wine coolers were cooler than Liebfraumilch, now hard seltzer is hot (served cold). White Zin was once de rigeur, though it was never French; it was from the good ol’ US of A. But then that became too sweet and the category died. Or seemed to. Because then rosé rose up like a zombie eager for fresh meat, though the current iteration of the pink stuff is more often French than not. Provence is the epicenter of it and the French have figured out how we like it: dry, pale pink, light and refreshing.
Dosoris Lane Proprietary Red
Maybe one of the most hyped up wines this year, Dosoris Lane is all about showing what type of crazy quality you can produce for under $15. Think black pepper notes from a little Syrah. The black fruits in the middle suggest a little bit of Cabernet; the red fruits and white pepper hint at Grenache. Put it all together and you have some epic red wine from the sunny south of France, with expansive and bright flavors.
Balcon sur la Mer Rose
The first time I ever saw this bottle and tried the wine, I kinda felt like I was transported onto a luxurious vacation. Someplace like Saint Barths. But I'm not paying and someone is just pouring me lovely rosé in infinite quantities as my feet rest in the sand. Balcon delivers everything you want in a great rosé in spades. This unctuous pink wine is dry, stony, fruity, lengthy. Comprised of Grenache, Grenache Gris and Mourvedre.

Les Peyrautins Pinot Noir
You have been told that Pinot Noir is the most finicky of grapes; indeed, it’s supposed to be the “heartbreak grape.” The statement is not false but it’s also not completely true. To make great Pinot noir is bloody difficult and to do it consistently is virtually impossible, unless you’re in some famous place. But that’s true of most grapes. It’s true that Pinot noir grown in the wrong place is pretty dreadful, maybe more dreadful than most other grapes. But the middle ground has plenty of wealth to it – you need a friendly place for grape growing but not too friendly. With France’s Pays d’Oc, there are places where it’s easy to ripen grapes and areas that offer just enough challenge to coax Pinot Noir into showing its friendly and compelling side. This is an ideal example.
Kingstree Cabernet
This is a tasty little gem unearthed by the pros at Banshee Wines. Banshee, started by three guys who just happened to like wine and wanted an excuse to be out west, hasn't been around long but they sure have kicked off righteously during their short career. They’ve always been focused upon cooler climate sites, especially with Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, and at the prices they offer their wines, it’s no surprise that things have gone swimmingly well.
Darley Alexander Valley Red
Darley is 100% single vineyard Cabernet from a famed vineyard in Alexander Valley. One that currently produces some $75 Cabernet, a $200+ Malbec (what?!?!?), and an $85 Sauvignon Blanc among other craziness. 93% Cabernet, 4% Petit Verdot, 2% Malbec and 1% Merlot showcases intense black fruits with lengthy velvety tannins.
Maison Belliac Chardonnay
Love Sonoma Cutrer? Try Maison Belliac Chardonnay! When the French decided to build the Canal du Midi, they unsurprisingly chose a portion of the Pays d’Oc that is flatter and less mountainous than much of the regional landscape. The climate is different, needless to say, but not so very different from sunny California, and the wine has some of that same buttery character that West Coast Chardonnay exemplifies.

Love Sonoma Cutrer? Try Benieres Chardonnay! The vast vineyards of France’s Languedoc hold many well-known grapes, including Chardonnay that is friendly and accessible. This one is gathered from organic vineyards on the Aspères plateau with its excellent marl and limestone soils. The winemaking is straightforward – stainless steel fermenters and just enough lees stirring to enrich the texture and flavors. We love finding wines like this!
Dosoris Lane Rose
Isn’t rosé wine one of the clearest harbingers of springtime? Sure, rosé is enjoyed year-round now, but as outdoor drinking becomes an actual possibility, the arrival of cool, wet drinks is the true representative of the renewal of life, at least for the wine lover. This blend of Grenache, Cinsault and Syrah hails from the South of France, where outdoor dining and rosé wines are de rigeur, made possible by the bright Mediterranean and its warming winds. You might not be traveling there right now, but a wine like Dosoris Lane can at least put you in mind of calmer times and sunny climes.
Montcharme Malbec
Malbec may turn out to be an excellent tool for Languedoc Roussillon winemakers. Is it for sure? Not at all. Malbec is a southwestern France grape and a tertiary grape at that; Mediterranean France has little experience with it. But the region has elevation, so maybe we’re going to see more like this tasty little thing. let’s be clear about this: Malbec likes altitude. Why? No one really knows.
Granicus Red
We like to shop in the Languedoc-Roussillon; it’s a place in Mediterranean France that has been important for more than a century but, despite the noise about inexpensive Bordeaux wines, remains the place to shop for value. When they are growing on chalky-clay terroirs, and when they apply Bordeaux techniques to it (fancy stainless steel, new French oak, minute temperature control and the like), they make a fascinating wine.
Corte Giovanni Extra Brut Prosecco
Though Prosecco is made throughout the northeastern Italian regions of Veneto and Friuli, there are two areas that produce wines with more vibrancy and complexity to them and that are solely elevated to DOCG status as a result: Conegliano-Valdobbiadene and Colli Asolani. A very dry version of Prosecco (the meaning of Extra Brut) is as modern as it gets, but it reflects the growing awareness of Colli Asolani as producing wines.

They’ve grabbed some vineyards in Gascony and we’re smart enough to snag some of their early efforts.
